11 students in Hanoi suffer fatigue after eating ‘exotic’ candy

Eleven students at Nguyen Quy Duc Middle School in Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi complained of headache, nausea, and fatigue on Wednesday after consuming candy labeled with foreign lettering.

The alleged food poisoning case occurred at 1:40 pm on the same day, according to a representative of the school.

The affected students were admitted to the school’s healthcare room after alerting teachers to their symptoms.

They said that they had bought the ‘exotic’ candy on their way to school and that their symptoms began to appear about 45 minutes after eating the sweet food.

They are currently in stable condition, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

The school alerted parents to the situation and warned both children and families against consuming ‘exotic’ candy.

The People’s Committee of Dai Mo Ward, where the school is located, sent a report of the case to the Nam Tu Liem District administration, and asked police officers to visit the store where the students bought the sweet for a check.

Police seized 66 bags of candy, peaches, strawberries, and other food products with labels written in a foreign language.

Tran The Cuong, director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, urged the leaders of the divisions of education and training in 30 districts and towns, as well as schools to tighten control over food safety.

City schools were told to warn students against eating candy of unknown origin.
