Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc has been included in the ranking for eight consecutive years.
On Wednesday, a research team led by Stanford University professor John P.A. Ioannidis published its 2026 update of the 'Top 2% Scientists' database, a widely recognized benchmark of scientific influence compiled under the 'Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators' using Scopus data.
The database measures scientists' citation impact using indicators including the h-index, the co-authorship-adjusted hm-index and authorship positions in research papers. The results are divided into two lists: single-year impact and career-long impact.
In the career-long list, Vietnam has 121 scientists from 44 research and educational institutions. VinUniversity has the largest number, with 16 scientists, followed by Ton Duc Thang University with 14, Duy Tan University with 13, Vietnam National University, Hanoi with seven, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology with six.
Among the 121 scientists with research affiliations in Vietnam, Prof. David R. Bangsberg of VinUniversity ranks highest at No. 8,926 globally. Hoang Anh Tuan of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport ranks second in Vietnam at No. 11,632, followed by Prof. J. Kevin Baird of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam at No. 13,083.
Notably, Vietnam National University, Hanoi is the only public higher education institution with two scientists among the 10 highest-ranked researchers in Vietnam on the global ranking.
They are Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach, ranked No. 22,065 globally, and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, ranked No. 27,065.
Nguyen Dinh Duc has been included in the ranking for eight consecutive years. In engineering and technology, he ranks No. 177 among nearly 158,000 scientists worldwide, placing him in the top 0.11 percent based on career-long impact. His research focuses on composite materials, advanced materials and structures.
The 2026 list recognizes contributions from both Vietnamese scientists with long-term research careers in Vietnam and international experts working in the country, spanning fields including medicine, energy, artificial intelligence, materials, finance, and engineering and technology.
The results highlight the presence of scientists working in Vietnam in the international research community, while also recognizing the role of higher education institutions in advancing scientific research and international cooperation.
