220kg unexploded magnetic bomb safely destroyed near major Vietnamese highway

Military sappers managed to detonate a 220kg wartime magnetic bomb, containing 80kg of explosives, in Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam on Tuesday, officials confirmed the same day.

The bomb, located adjacent to National Highway 15D, posed a major safety risk as this highway serves as a vital transportation route between Laos and Vietnam.

After a grassroots-level patrol team discovered the bomb and reported it to upper authorities, the Quang Tri Province Military Command dispatched sappers to the scene, where they cordoned off the area, put up hazard signs, and evacuated residents to ensure public safety.

Upon inspection, the bomb was identified as an Mk-36 magnetic bomb, measuring 160cm in length and 27cm in diameter, with 80kg of explosive material inside.

Due to its unstable condition, it was deemed too dangerous to move, and experts decided to neutralize it on-site using a remote electronic detonation system.
