2,500 people evacuated from flooding in central Vietnam

Authorities in central Vietnam evacuated more than 2,500 residents to safety as floods have submerged over 5,000 houses in the past two days.

The influence of an enhanced cold front, in combination with the impact of a high-altitude wind area, caused heavy rains that flooded many areas in Quang Nam Province between Friday evening and Sunday.

As of Sunday afternoon, floods reached the highest alarm level on the Tam Ky River and the second level on the Thu Bon River in the three-level ranking.

Rainwater had flooded 5,373 houses at a depth ranging from 0.1 to 1.2 meters by 5:00 pm Sunday, prompting local authorities to evacuate 779 households accounting for 2,535 people from dangerous areas.

A 36-year-old male resident of Phu Ninh District went missing near the Ong Hien Bridge on National Highway 1 during the floods.

The torrential rains triggered landslides, which damaged seven houses in Bac Tra My, Nui Thanh, and Phu Ninh Districts.

The days-long flooding situation also destroyed 97 hectares of crops and 152.5 hectares of aquaculture in Nui Thanh District.
