The incident occurred in Kich Mang Hamlet of Muong Gion Commune at around 05:00 pm on Wednesday, when six people in the family of Lo Thi Phieu ate fruit and yogurt purchased by an uncle who had traveled home for the New Year holiday.
The food was reportedly shared during a family gathering.
At around 08:10 pm, three young children in the household began showing severe symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and extreme fatigue.
The family immediately took the children to the Muong Gion Commune health station, formerly known as the Pa Ma Pha Khinh health station.
As the children’s condition worsened, medical staff decided to transfer them to Quynh Nhai Regional Hospital for further emergency treatment.
However, during the transfer, a three-year-old boy died despite emergency efforts.
The other two children were admitted to Quynh Nhai Regional Hospital and continued to receive treatment and monitoring.
At around 3:00 am on Thursday, or New Year’s Day, Phieu and two other adult family members developed similar symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and exhaustion.
They were also taken to Quynh Nhai Regional Hospital for medical observation and treatment.
Local authorities said that based on initial verification, the incident is suspected to be a case of food poisoning. No signs of external force or criminal activity have been identified so far.
Relevant agencies are continuing to collect information and assess the situation to determine the exact cause of the suspected poisoning.
Following the incident, leaders of the Muong Gion Commune Party Committee and local administration visited the family to offer condolences and emotional support for the loss of the young child.
The commune authorities also directed the local health station to urgently implement necessary measures to closely monitor and care for the remaining patients.
In addition, local officials are assisting the family with medical procedures and necessary legal formalities related to the death.
