3,300m-long second runway at Phu Quoc airport completed

The completion of the runway paves the way for the airport to handle wide-body aircraft and special flights ahead of the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Nguyen Ba Quan, director of Phu Quoc International Airport, said on Sunday that the second runway is a key component of the airport's expansion project.

The airport has developed an integrated operating plan, connecting the new runway with the existing taxiways and apron, as well as Terminal T2 and the VIP terminal, to ensure the safe handling of wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Airbus A350 and Boeing 777, as well as Code F aircraft when necessary.

The 45-meter-wide runway will support both regular flights and special flights for APEC 2027, Quan said.

During the initial phase, around 1,500 aviation lights and nearly 400 signs were installed, forming a comprehensive guidance network throughout the airport's airside area.

Engineers are currently inspecting the runway and each lighting cluster to ensure proper light intensity, beam direction and power supply, as well as synchronized operation.

The final work is underway ahead of a calibration flight scheduled for July 27.

The former Kien Giang administration, now part of An Giang Province, had granted the investment approval to Sun Group's Sun Airport Joint Stock Company to develop the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project to serve APEC 2027.

The project has a total investment of nearly VND22 trillion (US$836.3 million) and will be implemented in two phases, from 2025 to 2027 and from 2027 to 2030.

The airport expansion is considered strategically important for not only welcoming senior leaders and heads of state attending APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc but also supporting the island's long-term and sustainable development.
