$3.3mn bridge connects provinces in Vietnam's Mekong Delta after 7-year construction

Construction of the bridge began in April 2015

The Xeo Vet Bridge connecting Bac Lieu and Hau Giang Provinces was inaugurated on Tuesday afternoon after more than seven years of construction, ending local people’s dependence on ferry service to travel between the two localities in Vietnam's Mekong Delta region.

The People’s Committee of Bac Lieu held a ceremony on the same day to celebrate the inauguration of the bridge, the construction of which cost VND77.4 billion (US$3.3 million).

The construction began in April 2015 under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) format and was initially projected to reach completion by the end of 2016 in order to link Bac Lieu’s Hong Dan District with Hau Giang’s Long My District by road.

As the two districts were divided by the Vam Ngan Dua River, residents on the two sides had to resort to a ferry service for daily commute.

The project was suspended for three years over various reasons before being resumed in 2019.

Speaking at Tuesday’s inauguration ceremony, Pham Van Thieu, chairman of Bac Lieu, hailed the structure for the great benefits it would bring to residents in the region.
