According to the city’s Military Command, the search team excavated a pit measuring two meters deep, five meters long, and three meters wide, removing about 50 cubic meters of soil during Thursday.
The search area was expanded to three times its original size, with the search crew carefully removing soil layers based on witness accounts that burials were carried out in multiple layers.
The search will continue on Friday, with plans to further expand the excavation zone.
Authorities are also gathering information from witnesses and relatives of martyrs who fought in battles around Tan Son Nhat Airport during the night of January 30-31, 1968.
Authorities added that within just one day of media coverage and public support, they received more than 50 valuable messages and calls that may aid in locating additional remains.
The on-going search operation at Le Thi Rieng Park is part of a 500-day nationwide campaign launched in early April to locate and identify remains of fallen Vietnamese soldiers.
