In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 – 2025), the Ho Chi Minh City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs will organize a program to honor overseas Vietnamese who have played a vital role in building and developing the city.
The program is expected to be attended by city leaders, representatives from the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affair, other departments and agencies, as well as 50 overseas Vietnamese people who have contributed to the city’s growth over the past five decades.
In addition to recognizing their contributions, the program offers an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese to reflect on the nation’s proud historical journey, express their patriotism, and affirm their desire to keep contributing to the country’s development.
Through this event, overseas Vietnamese will also share their thoughts and emotions regarding the historic Reunification Day milestone, as well as their aspirations and hopes. It aims to deepen their emotional ties with their homeland.
The event reflects the care and appreciation of Ho Chi Minh City’s leadership for the overseas Vietnamese community. It is also an opportunity for the city’s Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs to express gratitude and appreciation to overseas Vietnamese.
Currently, over six million Vietnamese are living and working in 130 countries and territories around the world.
The overseas Vietnamese community, especially experts, intellectuals, and scientists, has actively offered valuable insights and practical solutions to support the sustainable development in Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam as a whole.
Remittances sent to Vietnam have become a crucial source for socio-economic development.
Over the past 30 years, total remittances to Vietnam have surpassed US$200 billion, equivalent to the volume of foreign direct investment.
In 2024 alone, Ho Chi Minh City received about $9.6 billion in remittances, accounting for 60 percent of the country's total.
In the first quarter of this year, the city recorded over $2.4 billion in remittances, an increase of more than 19 percent compared to the previous quarter.
