6 quakes hit Vietnam’s Quang Ngai in 1 morning

Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Institute of Earth Sciences under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, said the earthquakes were recorded between 12:41 am and 3:28 am, with the strongest occurring at 12:41 am.

The other five measured between 2.6 and 3.2 in magnitude.

The earthquakes had focal depths of about 8.1 kilometers and posed no disaster risk.

The Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center under the Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor seismic activity in the area.

Hundreds of earthquakes have been recorded in Quang Ngai since 2021. Some of the quakes have caused tremors felt across a wide area.

Anh said induced seismicity was the cause of the earthquakes recorded in the former Kon Tum area in recent years.

“Based on preliminary studies, earthquakes in the former Kon Tum area are expected to continue in the coming years, but they are unlikely to exceed magnitude 5.5,” Anh said, adding that more detailed studies should be conducted immediately to assess seismic activity in the area.

In Vietnam, earthquakes measuring 4.0-4.9 in magnitude are classified as light.

During such earthquakes, objects inside buildings may shake and make noises, while many people may feel the tremors. People outdoors may feel slight shaking.

Such earthquakes generally cause no damage or only minor damage and very rarely cause moderate or significant damage. Some objects indoors may fall.

Globally, an average of 10,000-15,000 earthquakes of this magnitude occur each year.

Earthquakes measuring 2.0-2.9 and 3.0-3.9 are classified as weak.

For earthquakes measuring 2.0-2.9, some people may feel very slight shaking, but such events do not cause damage to buildings.

For earthquakes measuring 3.0-3.9, some people may feel the tremors, and objects inside buildings may shake, although damage is rare.
