At around 9:30 am the same day, authorities received reports that squid fishing vessel CM-05006-TS, captained by 49-year-old Nguyen Van Khoi from Ca Mau Province, had sunk about two nautical miles southeast of Hon Lon Island due to severe thunderstorms.
Five people were on board at the time.
Just 20 minutes later, another squid boat, CM-05430-TS, also sank in the same waters.
This vessel, captained by 45-year-old Tran Van Doan, also from Ca Mau, carried four crew members.
A rescue team of 10 officers from the Nam Du Border Guard Station and two tourist vessels were dispatched to the scenes for rescue operations.
