The four gold medalists are Nguyen Manh Tuan, Nguyen The Minh and Tran Hoang Nam, 12th-grade students at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in Hanoi; and Dinh Xuan Phuc, a 12th-grade student at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted in Phu Tho Province, northern Vietnam.
The result further cements Vietnam's position among the world's top-performing countries at the International Chemistry Olympiad, extending its strong record in recent years, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.
Between 2020 and 2026, Vietnam's national team won 25 gold medals and three silver medals.
The 2026 International Chemistry Olympiad was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from July 10 to 19, bringing together 368 outstanding high school students from 93 countries and territories.
Contestants competed in two five-hour examinations covering theory and laboratory practice, demonstrating their chemistry knowledge, scientific reasoning, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and experimental skills.
The competition featured modern chemistry topics closely linked to advances in chemistry and materials science, including ammonia production, nuclear chemistry, and carbon dioxide reuse.
The examination assessed not only contestants' mastery of chemistry but also their ability to apply scientific knowledge to explaining natural phenomena, industrial processes, and engineering and technological challenges.
Participants were also required to analyze and process information, construct scientific arguments, and solve problems from a chemical perspective, providing a comprehensive assessment of their critical thinking and practical application of knowledge.
