Ancient volcanic crater near shoreline adds to allure of Ba Lang An Cape in central Vietnam

Located in Dong Son Commune, Ba Lang An Cape stretches into the sea as a black-rock peninsula surrounded by blue waters.

Besides its lighthouse, the area also preserves traces of a volcano that erupted millions of years ago.

The ancient crater covers an area of around 30 square meters.

When the tide recedes, it becomes a natural pool surrounded by layers of basalt and lava rock arranged in an almost complete circle.

In summer, clear seawater washes over the dark, glossy layers of basalt, creating a dramatic landscape.

Geologists said the area was formed when volcanic eruptions sent lava flowing into the sea, where it was rapidly cooled by seawater, creating distinctive layers of basalt and lava cliffs.

Viewed from above, winding black rock formations embrace the deep blue sea, creating a striking contrast.

When the tide is low, layers of rock emerge in distinct tiers, revealing traces of ancient lava flows.

As the water rises, waves cover the rocky outcrops, giving the landscape a completely different appearance.

Over the past few days, Ba Lang An Cape has become a popular stop for tourists and young people.

Many visitors come simply to see the ancient volcanic crater beside the sea.

The Ba Lang An Lighthouse is also a popular spot for young visitors to take photos.

Standing more than 36 meters tall, the cylindrical lighthouse has a range of 17 nautical miles.

In addition to serving as a navigational aid, it is now open to visitors.

Visitors must climb nearly 80 steps to reach the top. From there, they can take in the entire cape, with successive volcanic rock formations, a gently curving coastline, and seawater that changes color under the sunlight.

On clear days, the lighthouse offers views toward Ly Son Special Zone, an island formed by multiple ancient volcanic vents off the coast of Quang Ngai.

Huynh Le Quoc Dat, a visitor from Da Nang City, said he learned about Ba Lang An through social media and decided to bring his family there.

“My children can learn about the lives of local fishermen and see an ancient volcanic crater with their own eyes, something that cannot be found everywhere. It encourages them to learn more,” Dat said.

Beyond its geological appeal, Ba Lang An retains the peaceful rhythm of a coastal fishing community.

At the foot of the rocky outcrops, fishermen continue to dive for sea urchins and snails and catch seafood along the coast.

Visitors can explore the landscape and enjoy fresh seafood at nearby fishing villages.

According to the Dong Son Commune administration, Ba Lang An Cape and its lighthouse are becoming increasingly popular with visitors.

The local authorities are encouraging residents to develop tourism services linked to the preservation of the natural landscape, helping promote the image of Quang Ngai’s coastal areas.
