The Vietnam Competition Commission under the Ministry of Industry and Trade has received a report from Anker Innovations Limited regarding the recall of Anker-branded power banks with product codes A1681, A1689, A1257, and A1647, which were sold to consumers in Vietnam.
Specifically, the recall applies to the following product codes: PN A1681: Anker Zolo power banks (20,000mAh, 30W, integrated USB-C and Lightning cables); PN A1689: Anker Zolo power banks (20,000mAh, 30W, integrated USB-C cables); PN A1257: Anker power banks (10,000mAh, 22.5W); PN A1647: Anker power banks (20,000mAh, 22.5W, integrated USB-C cables).
The Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer stated that the affected products are designed to provide mobile charging solutions for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
These products were distributed through direct retail channels as well as e-commerce platforms such as Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok.
The total number of affected products in Vietnam is 30,927.
Welding process defect
The cause of the recall was determined to be a defect arising in the welding process of the negative electrode tab in the battery cells.
This issue occurred between November and December 2023, when unstable welding from new coil equipment led to poor-quality welds.
This technical error poses a risk of internal short circuits, which may cause the battery cells to overheat, especially after aging.
In addition, company analysis also found that the iron impurity level in the battery’s positive electrode exceeded permissible limits, posing further risks to the reliability and safety of the products.
Although no injuries have been reported in Vietnam, Anker is proactively conducting this recall as a precaution to ensure safety standards and maximize consumer protection.
Affected products can be replaced free of charge or exchanged for gift vouchers, with all recall and compensation costs to be covered by Anker.
The recall program began on June 27 and will continue until completed.
Consumers can check the product code printed on the bottom of the power bank and compare it with the list published on Anker’s official website.
If the product falls under the recall category, customers are advised to send their contact information to receive return and replacement instructions.
The Vietnam Competition Commission said it is closely monitoring the recall process conducted by Anker Innovations Limited.
