Apple plans to produce a new line of smart home devices, including tabletop robots, in Vietnam, marking another step in its diversification strategy away from China and expansion into the home technology market, Bloomberg reported.

The company is developing indoor security cameras and display-based home hubs designed to control appliances and serve as smart home command centers.

These products are scheduled for release next year, followed by a more advanced tabletop robot in 2027.

All three devices will be assembled in Vietnam by Chinese manufacturing partner BYD Co., which will oversee final assembly, testing, and packaging.

BYD already works with Apple to assemble iPads, AirPods, Apple Watches, MacBooks, and previous-generation HomePods in the country.

Apple's new home hub — a square-shaped display roughly seven inches in size — was completed in terms of hardware design nearly a year ago.

It was originally slated for a March 2025 launch but was delayed until spring 2026 due to postponed AI software integration.

Apple has reportedly set a target price of around US$350 for the device.

The tabletop robot will feature a nine-inch display and AI-powered motion capabilities, using motors and sensors to interact and move.

Drawing inspiration from Apple's canceled self-driving car project and other robotics research, the robot is expected to cost several hundred dollars.

Beginning production of an entirely new product category outside China represents a major strategic shift for Apple, which has gradually relocated portions of its assembly operations to lower-cost regions such as Vietnam and India.

Since the United States imposed new tariffs on China in March, Apple has accelerated its efforts to reduce manufacturing reliance on the mainland while increasing investment in alternative hubs like Vietnam.
