An Australian teenager died late last week in a motorbike accident when he was vacationing in Vietnam, a newspaper said.
Herald Sun, an Australian newspaper, reported that 19-year-old Pat Cullen passed away last Friday near the capital city of Hanoi.
The newspaper quoted the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as confirming the news, elaborating Cullen came from Victoria State.
A DFAT spokesman said that consular assistance was being provided to the victim’s family, according to the paper.
The Melbourne-based newspaper added that the Australian man had booked a ticket to return to his country this Friday.
The Australian Embassy in Hanoi, when contacted by Tuoitrenews, said, "You should seek official information about the accident, cause, location, responsibility etc from the police. Arrangements for the deceased are a matter for his family."
In the meantime, Hanoi police told Tuoitrenews that no expatriates died in road accidents in the capital last Friday so Cullen might have died in the neighboring provinces.
Standing out from the crowd
Facebook friends left online tributes when hearing about his sudden death, the paper said.
Cullen was described on his Facebook page as someone who stood out from the crowd and always made people smile.
One of his friends told the Herald Sun that he was supposed to come back months ago, but kept lengthening his trip.
It is believed the Aussie had spent almost a year working and exploring Southeast Asia.
