Australian tourist overcharged for cyclo ride in Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Police in Hoan Kiem Ward, Hanoi, have dealt with two cyclo drivers for charging an Australian tourist more than US$45 for a short sightseeing trip around the capital’s Old Quarter, with the drivers apologizing to the tourist and returning the money to him.

At around 4:00 pm on Monday, Hoan Kiem police received a complaint from Phillip Damien, a 55-year-old Australian national staying at Hanoi Plaza Suite on Dao Duy Tu Street.

He reported being charged VND1.2 million ($45.4) for a brief tour of the Old Quarter for himself and his family of four.

A task force verified the report, collected relevant information, and launched a probe into the case.

The drivers were quickly identified as N.V.B., 51, from Hung Yen Province, and N.V.H., 39, from An Khanh Commune, Hanoi.

Bien and Huy were summoned to the police station for questioning on the same day.

During the interrogation, both admitted to fleecing the tourist, apologized to Damien, and voluntarily returned the full amount.

Damien accepted their apology, received his money back, and made no further requests.

Hoan Kiem police documented the incident and required B. and H. to sign a commitment not to overcharge customers in the future.

On this occasion, the ward police also reminded tourism service providers to strictly comply with price regulations and foster a safe and civilized environment in the capital city.
