Major roads including Cach Mang Thang Tam, Le Hong Phong, Nguyen Van Linh, and Vo Nguyen Giap were inundated.

On Cach Mang Thang Tam Street in Binh Thuy Ward, water rose to nearly half the height of motorbike wheels, forcing riders to move slowly and cautiously.

Families with children faced particular difficulties, as deep water and poor visibility at night made travel hazardous.

Local authorities and support teams assisted residents by pushing stalled motorbikes and guiding vehicles through flooded sections. Their presence helped reduce accidents and ensured safer passage for commuters.

Truong Canh Tuyen, chairman of the municipal administration, asked the Department of Construction, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, local authorities, and relevant agencies to strengthen flood management and drainage systems.

They were also told to act immediately to address waterlogging and protect public safety.

Seasonal high tides frequently affect Can Tho, a city in the Mekong Delta.

The municipal administration recently unveiled its plan to launch a VND8.693-trillion (US$336 million) flood-control project to protect about 1,300 hectares in Binh Thuy Ward and nearby areas from flooding and high tides.

The project will include the construction of two navigation locks, Tuyen said.

Meanwhile, an additional navigation lock is planned near the under-construction Binh Thuy Bridge to help control flooding in Binh Thuy Ward.

The project is part of the Mekong Delta city’s broader climate adaptation strategy, focusing on drainage, elevation planning, and resilience against rising tides.
