Authorities start crackdown on illegal parking on new bridge in Saigon

Officers will focus on handling people who park their motorbikes illegally along Thu Thiem 2 Bridge

Authorities in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City have initiated a campaign to deal with wrong parking along the newly-inaugurated Thu Thiem 2 Bridge as well as illegal street vendors in nearby areas.

The campaign is carried out by authorities in Thu Thiem, An Khanh, and An Loi Dong Wards in Thu Duc City from May 12 to June 12, the ward administrations announced at a ceremony on Tuesday.

During this period, officers will focus on handling people who park their motorbikes illegally along Thu Thiem 2 Bridge.

They will also deal with street vendors who occupy the roadway and sidewalk along the road leading to Thu Thiem 2 Bridge as well as nearby roads in Thu Thiem New Urban Area in Thu Duc City.

Local authorities will also launch communication drives to remind local residents not to commit the wrongdoings.

Spanning the Saigon River between District 1 and Thu Duc City, the cable-stayed Thu Thiem 2 Bridge stretches a total of 1.4 kilometers and has six lanes of traffic.

Costing VND3,082 billion (US$133 million), the bridge was opened to traffic on April 28.

Since the inauguration of the bridge, many residents have been parking their motorbikes along the sides of the structure to hang out and take photos, which can threaten traffic safety.

On the road leading to Thu Thiem 2 Bridge and nearby roads in Thu Duc City, multiple street vendors have sold food and drinks on the roadway and sidewalk.

The activities have left behind a lot of garbage, resulting in environmental pollution.
