Brain-dead man’s organs save 5 lives in Hanoi

Doctors at E Hospital in Hanoi bore witness to a remarkable gesture in late June, in which a family decided to donate the organs of a loved one who was at risk of brain death following a tragic traffic accident to give a second chance at life to five individuals.

The donor, a male patient, suffered a severe brain injury in the accident and was admitted to E Hospital in a deep coma.

Despite the efforts of medical workers, the prognosis remained grim.

Recognizing the possibility of brain death, doctors and organ donation coordinators gently approached the family to discuss the life-saving potential of his organ donation.

Amid their grief, the family chose to respond with profound generosity.

They agreed to donate his organs, turning their tragedy into hope for others.

On the evening of June 23, the patient’s condition began to rapidly deteriorate, risking the quality of his organs.

In an urgent response, E Hospital collaborated with other hospitals to carry out organ removal and transplant procedures.

By dawn on June 24, the donor’s organs had been safely transported to other hospitals in the Vietnamese capital city to save five patients in need.

His heart was successfully transplanted into a patient at Viet Duc University Hospital, while his liver was split and shared between two patients – one at Vinmec and the other at the 108 Military Central Hospital.

His two corneas were sent to the Central Eye Hospital, restoring sight to two individuals.
