-- President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung and his spouse arrived in Hanoi on Tuesday afternoon for a four-day state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse.

Society

-- Vietnam’s Ministry of Home Affairs said more than 123,000 people filed for unemployment benefits in the first quarter of 2026, down by 42,500 from the previous quarter, with the highest numbers coming from manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and retail sectors and occupations such as garment workers, assemblers, accountants, sales staff, and drivers.

-- Authorities in Gia Lai Province said on Tuesday they were verifying social media reports of a rusted object resembling a tank hull discovered on Quy Nhon beach after a local man spotted and photographed the partially exposed structure before it was reburied by the tide.

Economy

-- Based on IMF projections for 2026-31, Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) measured by purchasing power parity is expected to rise to among the largest in Southeast Asia, potentially ranking second after Indonesia.

-- China does not seek a trade surplus with Vietnam and is working to address the imbalance by encouraging more high-quality Vietnamese exports to its market, Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam He Wei said at a press briefing in Hanoi on Tuesday.

Ho Chi Minh City

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has issued a plan to pilot teaching some subjects in English at eligible schools and aims to have about 10 percent of schools adopt English as a second language by 2030.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said it will conduct a 60-minute online English proficiency assessment for all grade 9 and grade 11 students in the 2025–26 school year, using a standardized test format from LanguageCert and PeopleCert, with testing scheduled for May 4–6 and May 18–20.

-- Ho Chi Minh City traffic police said on Tuesday they will impose temporary road closures and diversions in Vung Tau and Saigon Wards from Friday to April 30 to facilitate stages of the 2026 Ho Chi Minh City Television Cup national cycling race.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control said the city has recorded three human rabies cases, all fatal, in the year to date compared with five cases in all of 2025, warning that the hot weather may heighten transmission risks.

-- Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Health said it fined Long Phung Khang Cosmetics JSC VND165 million (US$6,266), suspended its production license for two months, and ordered the recall and destruction of 107 batches of products, including a skin cream found to contain the banned substance dexamethasone.

-- Vietnamese eight-year-old player Nguyen Duc Huyen My won a gold medal at the FIDE World Cadet and Youth Rapid & Blitz Championship 2026 in Serbia, which drew about 450 players from 40 federations.
