-- Many parts across Vietnam, especially the northern region and central localities from Thanh Hoa Province to Hue City, are expected to see scattered showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

-- Thousands of residents gathered in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Friday evening to witness a state-level rehearsal for the military parade and procession marking the 50th anniversary of Vietnam’s Reunification Day, with many spectators arriving hours early to secure a good view. -- A lightning strike killed a 12-year-old boy and injured two others while they were sheltering from heavy rain in a field hut in northern Son La Province on Friday morning, local authorities confirmed the same day.

-- Despite early seasonal rains, intense heat and dry conditions have pushed wildfire risks in southern Kien Giang Province to levels IV and V—the highest danger levels—threatening more than 18,750 hectares of forest, local forestry officials reported on Friday.

-- Hau Giang Bioenergy JSC inaugurated its biomass power plant in southern Hau Giang Province on Friday, marking Vietnam’s first biomass power plant fueled by rice husks. The plant has a total capacity of 20MW and carries a price tag of VND875 billion (US$34 million).

-- Hanoi is set to host a series of exciting festivals, exhibitions, and cultural activities from April 27 to May 1 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam’s Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1), the city’s Department of Tourism said on Friday.

-- Ho Chi Minh City will waive bus fares for all routes, including interprovincial lines, on April 30 to honor passengers and celebrate Vietnam’s Reunification Day, the city’s Department of Transport and Public Works announced on Friday.

World News

-- U.S. President Donald Trump asserted in an interview published on Friday that tariff negotiations were underway with China, but Beijing denied any talks were taking place, the latest in a series of conflicting signals over what progress was being made to de-escalate a trade war threatening to sap global growth, according to Reuters.

-- Canada stands to elect a more business-friendly government than has been the case in recent years but its trade-dependent economy could be in line for an increased level of deficit spending, analysts and investors said before Monday's vote, Reuters reported.
