Politics:

-- President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, Heng Samrin, is on an official visit to Vietnam from August 18-20. During a meeting with his host counterpart Nguyen Sinh Hung yesterday, he expressed his hope to see the trade turnover between the two countries lift up to over US$2.5 billion a year.

Society:

-- Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City will hold a contest to select an architectural design for its administrative center of the city located on an area of over 18,000 square meters. The center is planned to have a heliport.

-- A spell of heavy raining with the rainfall from 40-130mm is forecast to occur in the northern provinces of Vietnam. It may cause flash flood and land collapse, according to the Central Hydrometeorology Center.

-- 14 young people were arrested yesterday for involving in a fight at the General Hospital of the central highland province of Dak Lak.

-- An increase of illegal buses has recently been recognized at areas around bus stations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

-- Vietnam Maritime Police arrested three people yesterday for trafficking drugs in the northern provinces of Vietnam.

Business:

-- The retail price of petrol in Vietnam decreased from VND600 a liter since 3:00pm yesterday. US$1 equals VND20,800.

-- The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has rejected a proposal of two companies to grant loans of thousands of billions dong to import used fishing ships.

Sports:

-- The Vietnamese national U-19 football team beat Cambodian U-21s 3-0 yesterday in Brunei, winning a ticket to advance to the semifinals of the Southeast Asian U-22 Football Championship.

Education:

-- The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City has suggested a VND4 trillion (US$192.3 million) project for primary pupils of the first, second and third graders to use electronic textbook at schools. That means each pupil will have to spend VND3.5 to 5 million (US$168 – 240) to buy a tablet and so, HCMC needs 320,000 tablets.

-- Ho Chi Minh City will recruit an addition of 455 kindergarten teachers. Earlier, the city recruited 482 kindergarten teachers to prepare for the new school year to start in September.
