-- The 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam continued a full-day session on Thursday, chaired by Party General Secretary To Lam, President of the Presidium, focusing on personnel matters of the 14th Party Central Committee. The congress approved the list of 200 newly-elected members of the 14th Party Central Committee, including 180 official members and 20 alternate members.

-- The 14th Party Central Committee will convene its first plenary session to elect the Politburo, the Party General Secretary, the Secretariat, the Central Inspection Commission, and the Chairman of the Central Inspection Commission on Friday morning.

Society

-- The Hanoi Department of Education and Training on Thursday announced that when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius, students at kindergartens and elementary schools will not attend school and may switch to online learning.

-- Vietnam’s population was 102.3 million in 2025, ranking third in Southeast Asia and 16th in the world, according to the Vietnam Population Authority under the Ministry of Health.

-- The People’s Court of An Giang Province in southern Vietnam on Thursday held a first-instance trial and sentenced Nasyrov Odiljon Murzaalimjonovich, a citizen of Uzbekistan, to six years in prison for possessing and circulating 36,300 counterfeit U.S. dollars, including 363 $100 bills, on Phu Quoc Island.

Ho Chi Minh City

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction will announce a list of streets and locations eligible for the installation of electric motorbike battery-swapping cabinets on sidewalks in January.

Economy

-- The People’s Committee of Ca Mau Province in southern Vietnam has approved a plan to select investors to implement two wind power plant projects with a total investment of over VND4.8 trillion (US$182.7 million).

-- National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines plans to operate more than 1,300 night flights from February 1 to March 3, offering nearly 300,000 seats to meet passengers’ travel demand during the 2026 Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.
