Storm Wipha

-- Storm Wipha, the third to enter the East Vietnam Sea this year, was 275 km east of Quang Ninh–Hai Phong at 4:00 am on Monday and is expected to move into the Gulf of Tonkin later in the day.

-- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Sunday evening ordered local authorities to control movement, manage traffic flow, and limit public travel as storm Wipha and pre-landfall thunderstorms approached.

-- Thanh Hoa Province in north-central Vietnam has prepared to evacuate 170,000 people as storm Wipha is forecast to directly hit Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong City, with the strongest winds expected along the coastal areas of Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, and Thanh Hoa Provinces.

-- Authorities in southern Vietnam on Sunday warned tourism operators in Phu Quoc and Kien Hai sea areas to ensure safety and avoid taking visitors to rough seas, as storm Wipha brought rain and thunderstorms to the areas.

-- China’s State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Sunday upgraded its emergency response for flood and typhoon control to Level III in the southern provinces of Guangdong and Hainan in response to storm Wipha, according to China Daily. China has a four-tier emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe response.

Society

-- The closures of the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway’s entrances forced traffic from Lam Dong Province to reroute via National Highway 1, causing a jam stretching more than 10 km on Sunday evening.

-- A dolphin swam close to shore at Cua Tung Beach in Quang Tri Province, north-central Vietnam on Sunday afternoon, drawing crowds of curious tourists and locals who waded in to interact with it.

-- About 100 Thai and Vietnamese volunteers registered to donate blood during a cycling and blood donation event in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday to mark the 73rd birthday of Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn (July 28).

-- Nine people were hospitalized on Sunday for suspected food poisoning following a meal at a private home in Phong Dinh Ward, Hue City.

-- Former football star Diego Forlan, known for his time with Atletico Madrid and as a striker for Uruguay who won two European Golden Shoes and a World Cup Golden Ball, met Vietnamese fans at an event in Hanoi on Sunday evening.
