-- Prime Minister Le Minh Hung will lead a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, the Philippines from May 7 to 8 at the invitation of Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr, Chair of ASEAN in 2026, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Society

-- The People’s Committee of Dak Lak Province has fined a bakery owner in Ea Drang Commune VND80 million (US$3,037) and suspended the business for three months following a case in which 86 people were hospitalized for food poisoning after eating banh mi bought from the bakery, the provincial Department of Health said on Monday.

-- Authorities, together with nearly 20 residents, helped lift a bus to rescue a woman trapped underneath after a collision between the bus and the woman’s motorbike in Hanoi on Monday.

-- A transfer speedboat lost control and collided with a mooring buoy in the Luon Cave area of Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam on Monday, causing all 15 people on board, including 11 foreigners, to fall into the water. Three of them were injured.

-- Authorities and fishermen in Gia Lai Province on Monday performed burial rites for a two-tonne whale that had washed ashore on Sunday. The whale was still alive at the time but severely weakened and covered with multiple open wounds.

Economy

-- The Airports Corporation of Vietnam reported after-tax profit of more than VND3.346 trillion ($127.1 billion) in the first quarter of 2026, up 7.2 percent year on year, marking the highest quarterly profit in the company’s history, according to its consolidated financial report.

Travel

-- The People’s Committee of Hue City in central Vietnam said its chairman had sent a letter thanking domestic and international visitors who traveled to Hue during a nine-day holiday from April 25 to May 3 as the city set multiple tourism records in both visitor numbers and revenue.

-- My Tho Marina in Dong Thap Province, southern Vietnam, in coordination with Viet Nhat Tourism Co. Ltd., welcomed a group of around 1,000 visitors from Indonesia on Monday. This marks the largest group of foreign tourists ever to arrive at the marina, signaling a positive outlook for local tourism amid the recovery of the international market.

Education

-- The president of Vietnam National University–Ho Chi Minh City has appointed two visiting professors, including a scientist ranked among the world’s top one percent, to directly teach postgraduate courses, supervise research, and promote academic collaboration at the University of Technology and the University of Information Technology.
