Bus driver fined, faces suspension after running red light in Ho Chi Minh City

A bus driver has been booked for running a red light in downtown Ho Chi Minh City and is at risk of being suspended from work, a local traffic official confirmed at noon on Tuesday.

The driver, N.T.B., residing in the city’s District 6, admitted to his violation while working with traffic police officers who showed B. video footage featuring him driving through the red light at the intersection of Cach Mang Thang Tam Street and Bui Thi Xuan Street in District 1.

The officers also conducted alcohol and drug tests on the 58-year-old driver, which returned negative results.

His red light running, recorded on a dashcam and shared on social media, is subject to a fine of VND4-6 million (US$158-236) and a potential driver’s license suspension of one to three months.

Following his violation, the city’s Public Transportation Management Center suggested that Ho Chi Minh City Transport JSC suspend the bus driver from work starting 9:00 am on Tuesday.

The company was also asked to submit a report about the case by 5:00 pm the same day.

The center has urged the company to regularly remind and retrain its drivers and bus staff to strictly follow public transport regulations and safety laws to help prevent future violations.

It also warned that bus drivers who commit serious offenses that endanger road safety will be dismissed in two years' time.
