Chinese convenience store chain Ohmee expands into Vietnam’s Petrolimex gas stations as Singapore’s Oh!Some shrinks

Chinese convenience store chain Ohmee is expanding in Vietnam through a new partnership with state-owned fuel retailer Petrolimex, while Singaporean lifestyle retailer Oh!Some appears to be scaling back its operations after rapidly opening stores in the country.

Ohmee is the Vietnamese brand of Meiyijia, one of China’s largest convenience store chains, with more than 40,000 outlets nationwide.

Oh!Some, meanwhile, is a Singaporean retail chain focused on lifestyle and consumer goods for young shoppers.

Both brands target younger consumers and quickly expanded after entering Vietnam.

Ohmee has entered into a strategic partnership with Petrolimex and launched a convenience store model at the fuel retailer’s gas stations, according to a post on its Facebook page.

Two Ohmee Express stores have opened at Petrolimex gas stations in Hanoi, targeting customers who stop to refuel and want to quickly purchase food and beverages.

Ohmee entered Vietnam around April 2026.

Its stores have been concentrated mainly in Hanoi, with earlier outlets located in densely populated areas and urban developments, according to updates on the brand’s Facebook page.

The partnership with Petrolimex is expected to give Ohmee access to a broad network of retail locations.

Petrolimex currently operates more than 5,500 gas stations nationwide across its distribution system.

Oh!Some expands rapidly, then appears to scales back

Meanwhile, Oh!Some, a retail chain under Singapore-based Blue Origin Group, appears to be scaling back its operations in Vietnam.

Several Oh!Some stores at shopping malls in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have displayed notices stating that they are "temporarily closed." Some stores have had empty shelves, while others have already shut down.

However, the brand has yet to make an official announcement about the future direction of its operations in Vietnam.

Oh!Some entered the Vietnamese market in April 2025 with a retail model aimed at young consumers. Its product range includes cosmetics, personal care products, fashion items and food, combined with entertainment-oriented elements.

By late 2025, Oh!Some was reported to have 13 stores in Vietnam, focusing on building a network in major cities.

Around August 2026, customers were surprised when Oh!Some launched promotions of up to 80 percent off at its brick-and-mortar stores and e-commerce shops in Vietnam.

The brand’s website currently lists many items as out of stock, while its e-commerce shop also has relatively few products available.

In Vietnam, Oh!Some competes with foreign brands with similar business models, including Miniso, Minigood and KKV. These chains offer a wide range of products, particularly trendy items, targeting young consumers at relatively affordable prices while frequently refreshing their product selections.

Vietnam’s retail market: Attractive but challenging

Vietnam’s retail market for goods and services reached nearly US$270 billion in 2025, including about $205 billion in goods retail sales, according to a report by the Agency for Domestic Market Surveillance and Development under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The market is forecast to grow by an average of 10-12 percent annually, with total retail sales of goods and services potentially reaching around $450 billion by 2030.

The convenience store segment alone was worth approximately $486 million in 2025, according to Insight Asia, with a compound annual growth rate of more than 13 percent.

However, the market is also highly competitive, with both domestic and foreign brands expanding their presence.

In the convenience store segment, names such as Circle K, GS25, Ministop, FamilyMart and 7-Eleven have established operations in Vietnam, while chains such as WinMart+ and Bach Hoa Xanh compete in the mini-supermarket segment.
