Coffee factory hit with huge fine for illegally discarding wastewater in north-central Vietnam

The firm was also ordered to cover the fee of the assessment and analysis of wastewater samples

A coffee processing plant in Quang Tri Province, north-central Vietnam has been fined nearly VND290 million (US$11,860) for discharging untreated wastewater into the environment.

An official from the Quang Tri People’s Committee said on Tuesday that Ha Sy Dong, vice-chairman of the provincial administration, had signed a decision to impose an administrative fine on Trung Thang Phat Company, headquartered in Khe Sanh Town, Huong Hoa District, for polluting the environment.

The company leased a workshop in Khe Sanh for the production and processing of coffee products.

But they neglected to appropriately dispose of a significant amount of untreated wastewater, leading to the exceedance of permitted levels for both chemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids indices.

Apart from the fine, the firm was ordered to cover the fee of the assessment and analysis of wastewater samples.

Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper had previously written about the negative impacts of the firm’s illegal wastewater dumping, which caused households near the factory to face unpleasant smells.

As residents repeatedly expressed complaints about the plant’s behavior to pollute the environment, the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment dispatched a team to oversee its operations and discovered its wrongdoing.
