Company fined for printing T-shirts featuring Vietnam map without key archipelagoes

Authorities in Ninh Binh Province, northern Vietnam have fined a local company VND22.5 million (US$854) for producing 6,000 T-shirts featuring a map of Vietnam that omitted the country's Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes, officials said on Thursday.

Provincial police confirmed they had coordinated with the Department of Culture and Sports and customs officials to supervise the destruction of the shirts.

The items were produced by Environment Resources Investment and Technical JSC, based in Hoa Xa Industrial Park, Dong A Ward, Ninh Binh, as gifts for employees.

Investigators discovered that the company had printed 6,000 shirts depicting Vietnam’s map but failing to represent Vietnam’s full sovereignty by excluding the two archipelagoes.

Officials deemed this a serious violation affecting national security and territorial integrity.

The Department of Culture and Sports fined the company VND22.5 million under regulations prohibiting the printing of maps that misrepresent national sovereignty.

All shirts were confiscated and destroyed.

Police urged organizations and individuals to strictly comply with laws on territorial sovereignty and avoid producing or using maps of Vietnam that omit Hoang Sa and Truong Sa.
