About 350 workers are on site daily at the project, also known as the Pearl Theater, working in two shifts from early morning to evening. 

Construction began in October 2025, and the foundation has been completed, with crews now installing the steel framework and building the underground levels. 

The basement is expected to be finished by January 18.

The opera house and an adjoining themed cultural and arts park are being built on a 191,000-square-meter site on the Quang An peninsula along West Lake. 

The project is being developed by Sun Group and was launched to mark the 71st anniversary of Hanoi's liberation (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025).

Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the venue will feature two main auditoriums: a 1,797-seat opera hall and a flexible multi-purpose hall that can host concerts and live events, with capacity for about 1,430 standing spectators and 216 seated in balcony configuration.

The complex will also include rehearsal rooms, exhibition and museum spaces, public foyers, and viewing platforms. 

Developers say the venue is intended to host a wide range of performances, from symphony concerts and opera to large-scale entertainment events, while serving as a new cultural and tourism hub for the capital.

A defining architectural feature is a domed roof inspired by ripples on West Lake, using ultra-thin, high-strength materials with a nacre-like finish designed to reflect changing light throughout the day.

The surrounding area will include restored ponds and landscaped water features planted with West Lake lotus, as well as planned boat piers and a future water tourism route connecting the site to other parts of the lake.

The West Lake Opera House is scheduled for completion in 2027.
