The Hanoi court issued the death sentence against the murderer on Tuesday.
The trial was closed to the public.
According to the case file, Vuong’s family consisted of his mother, named D.T.Nh, his wife, D.T.Th, and his two children, aged 19 and 17, respectively.
He worked as a bamboo weaver, while his wife was a construction worker to support the family.
In early 2024, his mother was ill and bedridden, so Vuong quit his job to take care of her.
Vuong admitted to investigators that he was in poor health and his family was impoverished, which led to a life of hardship and despair.
As such, he made a plan to kill his family members and then commit suicide to escape poverty, according to the indictment.
On January 15, while his wife was going out for work, and his younger child was going to school, he formed the intention to kill his older child, V.T.H..
He used a wooden pestle to attack the H..
After killing his daughter, he quickly placed the body under the bed and attempted to eliminate all evidence from the scene.
While his other child was sleeping on the afternoon of the same day, Vuong wielded a hammer to murder his son.
He continued to hide the victim’s body under the bed.
After his wife came home at 5:00 pm and asked him where their children were, he replied that they had gone out for personal reasons.
At midnight, when his wife was sound asleep, he killed her with a hammer.
He continued to kill his mother at around 1:00 am the next day, and then took sleeping pills to commit suicide, but failed.
He took a passenger bus from Hanoi to flee to Da Nang City, central Vietnam on the afternoon of the day, then continued traveling to Vung Tau City, now part of Ho Chi Minh City.
He went to Lien Tri Pagoda to pray for the victims.
Two days later, Vuong was arrested by the Hanoi police while on the run.
At the trial, after being handed down the death penalty, Vuong expressed his wish to have the sentence carried out soon.
The court concluded that his actions took the lives of his family members, leaving no possibility for his rehabilitation or re-education, and therefore sentenced him to the highest penalty.
