Da Nang crackdown on sidewalk encroachment sees little change in suburban areas

Sidewalks in downtown Da Nang City, central Vietnam have become more pedestrian-friendly after a recent enforcement campaign, but many suburban areas still see little improvement, with illegal encroachment continuing largely unchanged despite ongoing warnings from local authorities.

In tourist-heavy wards such as Hai Chau and Son Tra, many businesses have pulled back tables, chairs, and signage after repeated inspections.

Streets like Tran Phu, Bach Dang, and Vo Nguyen Giap now offer clearer pedestrian lanes, creating a more orderly urban environment.

However, the situation remains starkly different in several outlying areas.

In Thanh Khe Ward, particularly along Tran Cao Van and Le Do Streets, sidewalk encroachment continues to be widespread.

During the afternoon, shops continue to display goods across walkways, while motorbikes block pedestrian access.

At the Le Do-Tran Cao Van intersection, many grocery shops often occupy the entire sidewalk, forcing people into the roadway.

Cao Tan Binh, a resident on Le Do Street, said local authorities have recently conducted outreach campaigns to remind residents to comply.

“Verbal reminders alone are not effective," Binh said.

“Sidewalks are almost impossible to use because of parked motorbikes and signboards.

“Nearly every shop takes advantage of the space to display goods."

Similar conditions are reported in Cam Le, where enforcement has yet to produce consistent results.

On several streets, residents keep placing potted plants and household items on sidewalks, further obstructing pedestrian access.

On Wednesday, authorities painted dividing lines to separate pedestrian paths from parking areas, but residents reported limited effectiveness.

The municipal administration said its awareness campaign ended in March, and from April onward, authorities will begin strict enforcement.

Violators will face penalties as Da Nang seeks to restore sidewalks across the city.
