Da Nang declares disaster emergency in mountainous areas as landslide risks persist after flood season

Authorities in Da Nang City, central Vietnam have declared a natural disaster emergency in several mountainous residential areas, citing land subsidence and heightened landslide risks linked to prolonged heavy rain and storms during last year’s flood season.

The Da Nang People’s Committee said the emergency covers multiple communes affected by ground cracks and unstable slopes following weeks of heavy rain at the end of last year and the impact of storms Fengshen in October and Kalmaegi in November.

In Loong Poc residential area in Tak Lu Village, Nam Tra My Commune, officials identified a major ground fissure about 50 centimeters wide and more than 250 meters long that cut across the main concrete road, forming a large landslide slip zone that could collapse at any time if rain or vibrations continue.

Local authorities said a survey conducted on December 2, 2025 found 48 households living in an extremely high-risk zone.

Emergency evacuation plans have been prepared and food and essential supplies stockpiled.

Emergency conditions were also declared in Mang Lin Village and Tak Buon Village in Tra Van Commune, where prolonged rain in late October and early November caused landslides, isolating residential areas.

In Mang Lin Village, underground water holes and large cracks on the mountainside above the settlement were found to threaten 32 households, while in Tak Buon Village, cracks stretching about 300 meters and rising groundwater directly endangered 41 households.

In Dong Giang Commune, authorities recorded multiple cracks ranging from 200 to 500 meters long on steep hillsides in A Dieu Village and nearby areas, affecting 109 households.

Barriers and warning signs have been installed and emergency measures deployed under city instructions.

In Tra Leng Commune, dozens of houses in Ong Sup and Ong Hung Villages collapsed or were damaged after storms, while large cracks on hillsides above the settlements threaten 40 households.

Another crack more than 50 meters long, with subsidence of three to five meters, was detected on a mountainside in Pa Rum Village, Nam Giang Commune, posing a burial risk to residential areas below and affecting about 16 households.

The chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee ordered local leaders and civil defense commanders to closely monitor landslide developments, prepare for evacuations, and implement measures to minimize loss of life and property.

The emergency declaration follows severe damage caused by historic floods in late 2025, particularly in highland areas such as Nam Tra My, Bac Tra My, and Nam Giang.

Authorities said multiple residential areas have since been relocated, while a reconstruction drive dubbed the Quang Trung Campaign has built and repaired hundreds of homes for affected highland residents.
