Drunk driver plows into police car in northern Vietnam

A drunk driver crashed his car into a police car, dragging both vehicles several meters away in a no-casualty traffic accident in Vietnam on Sunday.

The accident occurred in Lac Thuy District, Hoa Binh Province at around 6:00 pm on Sunday, when Quach Van Cong, 29, from the province’s Yen Thuy District, was driving from north-central Thanh Hoa Province to Hanoi.

At that time, Cong suddenly crossed the lane markers and crashed into a service car of the Hoa Binh traffic police department going in the opposite direction.

The violent collision resulted in the two cars falling off the side of the road about three meters from the location where the crash occurred. No one was injured in the road accident.

Both vehicles were damaged, with the left side of the traffic police patrol car heavily deformed.

After the accident, ofificers were dispatched to block the scene and regulate traffic flow to avoid congestion.

A breath alcohol test showed that Cong had an alcohol concentration of 0.637 milligrams per liter of breathing air.

Vietnam’s Law on Prevention and Control of Harmful Effects of Alcoholic Beverages strictly bans a person from driving a vehicle after drinking alcoholic beverages.

People will be fined if they use any types of vehicles while their alcohol concentration is above zero.

Car drivers will be fined VND30-40 million ($1,299-1,732) and have their driver's license revoked for 22-24 months if they break regulations on drink-driving.

Motorcyclists will face a VND6-8 million ($260-346) and have their driver's license revoked for 22-24 months for the same offense.

Cyclists shall be subject to a VND400,000-600,000 ($17.3-26) fine when they are found riding after drinking alcoholic beverages.
