Earthquake in China causes light tremors in Hanoi

Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Institute of Earth Sciences under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the earthquake occurred in Liuzhou at 8:44 pm at a depth of around 10 kilometers.

The epicenter was more than 500 kilometers from Hanoi in a straight line.

He said that as a result of the earthquake, some people in tall buildings located far from the epicenter may have felt shaking.

Initial assessments indicated that the quake posed no disaster risk to Vietnam.

The Vietnam Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center continues to monitor the situation, Anh informed.

Following the earthquake, many residents in Hanoi’s high-rise buildings reported experiencing tremors.

“I was sitting on the 10th floor when I felt the building shaking, it made me feel dizzy,” said a Hanoi resident.

In Vietnam, earthquakes measuring between 5.0 and 5.9 are classified as moderate.

Such earthquakes can cause moderate to severe damage to poorly built structures, while well-built structures may suffer little or no damage. 

These earthquakes may also result in casualties depending on the circumstances.

Globally, there are between 1,000 and 1,500 earthquakes each year.
