Electricity on when Vietnamese electrician electrocuted to death

On Wednesday, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters interviewed locals living close to the site where an electrician was shocked to death in Tam Ky, the capital city of the central province of Quang Ngai, on Sunday.

The incident occurred at 1:35 pm when Nguyen Van Chung, 37, from Tam Xuan 2 Commune, Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam, climbed a power pole in Vinh Binh Village, Tam Thang Commune, to renew the 22kV power lines, police reports said.

According to the reporters, some residents in the area recognized the electricity was on at the time of the incident.

Eyewitnesses said that they had received notifications about the shutdown in the area for the line renewal, but Chung still got shocked.

The notifications, provided by a Tam Ky electricity firm, said that the shutdown lasted from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm.

The firm also stated that it had switched the electricity off during the upgrade process.

Nguyen Thi Nhung, 37, whose house is next to the utility pole where Chung was electrocuted, said that when she was cleaning the house’s water tank, she heard electricians riding on bikes from other poles shouting that electricity was still on.

“They urged the team fixing at the pole next to my house to climb down,” Nhung recounted, adding that at 1:40 pm, she heard workers on land tell Chung to stay still, but he was found dead at that time.

She continued, “Some of my neighbors told me that they could charge their phones and laptops for 15 minutes.

“My son also told me that he noticed the phone received power at that time.”

Chau Van Thanh, 16, Nhung’s son, recounted, “My phone’s battery was only 5 percent left so I plugged it in to let it charge automatically at 5:30 pm when the electricity was planned to be available again.”

“As I saw the worker get shocked, I unplugged the phone to take photos and recognized the battery increased to eight percent,” Thanh noted.

Tran Thi Kim, whose house sits just 800 meters from the site, stated that the electricity was still on and her household was using a fan and watching TV at that time.

“I was notified about the shutdown, which was planned to last until 5:30 pm, but at 12:35 pm electricity was available.”

“When I heard about the incident, all the power at my house was shut down until the evening.”

A grocer near the site said that progress on the electric upgrades was still on track until noon, when Chung climbed the pole and was electrocuted.

According to locals, there were some facilities, including chicken barns, telecommunication stations, and Tam Thang Industrial Park, equipped with generators, but their activities during the time of the incident are unknown.

The electricity source causing Chung’s death is still under investigation, police said.
