Filling station worker refuses bank transfer, siphons gasoline back in Vietnam

An image taken from a video shows a gas station employee refusing to accept a bank transfer and siphoning the gasoline that have already been pumped into a customer’s motorcycle.

Tran Huu Minh Tung, chairman of the People’s Committee of Tien Thanh Ward, said on Wednesday afternoon that officials had summoned the gas station owner for questioning.

The incident reportedly occurred at Tien Thanh Petroleum Store, operated by Tien Thanh Private Enterprise in Tien Thanh Ward, formerly part of Binh Thuan Province and is now under the administration of Lam Dong Province.

The new Lam Dong Province was formed by merging the old province with the former Binh Thuan and Dak Nong Provinces on July 1.

According to the video shared online, a motorcyclist stopped at the gas station to purchase VND50,000 (US$1.9) worth of fuel.

After the fuel was pumped into the motorcycle, the customer informed the employee that he did not have cash and would pay via bank transfer instead.

However, the employee refused to accept the transfer payment, and proceeded to siphon all the gasoline out of the motorcycle.

As a result, the customer, whose motorcycle was left without fuel, was forced to push the bike for some three kilometers.

The video quickly drew strong reactions from the public.

During the meeting with officials, the filling station owner admitted that the employee’s conduct toward the customer was inappropriate and did not comply with the company’s rules.

The owner stated that the business policy allows customers to use all reasonable forms of payment, including bank transfers.

The gas station owner decided to terminate the employment of the staff member involved in the incident.

In addition, the owner instructed all remaining employees to improve their customer service practices and ensure more respectful and flexible treatment of customers in the future.
