Floods triple vehicle repair demand in Hanoi

Heavy rains linked to storms Bualoi and Matmo flooded multiple streets, stalling thousands of cars and motorbikes.

Repair shops in Hanoi reported three to four times their usual workload.

Le Xuan Tien, a mechanic in Dai Kim Ward, said his team worked over eight hours daily and at times had to turn customers away.

“Many vehicles were too damaged to repair quickly,” he said.

Repair costs range from VND200,000 (US$7.6) to VND600,000 ($22.8), with higher fees for engines affected by water.

Long queues meant some customers waited overnight.

Nguyen Van Hieu, who runs a shop in Dinh Cong Ward, reported 50–80 vehicles per day, up from 20–30 normally.

He brought in extra staff to meet demand.

Common issues included waterlogged spark plugs, mufflers, and engines.

Mechanics advised turning off engines in flooded areas to prevent further damage.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has recorded rainfall of 301mm in Hanoi’s Me Tri station, 403mm in Bac Ninh Province, and 564mm in Thai Nguyen Province over the past two days.

More rain was forecast across northern Vietnam through Wednesday morning, with localized totals over 120mm.
