The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Wang Tiejun, is being investigated on a robbery charge.
Earlier, at around 6:00 pm on June 14, police in Ngu Hanh Son Ward received a report from F.H., a foreign woman staying at a hotel on Vo Nguyen Giap Street, that a man had covered her head with a plastic bag and snatched her handbag.
The bag contained an iPhone 15, two chip vouchers valued at US$200, and cash.
Leaders of the Criminal Police Division under the Da Nang Police Department directed multiple task forces to coordinate with Ngu Hanh Son Ward police to launch an immediate manhunt that same night to apprehend the perpetrator.
Based on evidence collected at the scene, police reviewed more than 100 individuals with criminal records or prior convictions related to property crimes, along with dozens of foreign nationals residing in the area who showed suspicious signs.
On June 16, the Criminal Police Division identified Wang Tiejun as the suspect and swiftly arrested him for questioning.
Wang reportedly admitted that he had run out of money and decided to commit robbery.
According to investigators, the suspect knew that F.H. worked as a manager at a casino and often carried valuable belongings.
He allegedly monitored her daily routine and carefully prepared tools and equipment for the crime, including plastic and cloth bags, spray paint, a motorbike, and a change of clothes to disguise himself.
On the afternoon of June 14, the suspect went to the hotel where the victim was staying and lay in wait.
Wang allegedly used spray paint to blur surveillance cameras in the hotel lobby area.
When he saw F.H. waiting for an elevator, he allegedly approached her from behind, covered her head with a plastic bag and a cloth bag, rendering her unable to resist, before grabbing her handbag and fleeing the scene.
