A clinic on Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam on Wednesday evening saved a foreign tourist bitten by a white-lipped pit viper, a species of venomous snake, the medical facility said on Thursday.
S.O.S. Phu Quoc Clinic received the international traveler who showed symptoms of a high body temperature and shortness of breath at about 6:00 pm on Wednesday.
His leg had a mark of a bite but he did not know which animal had bitten him.
Doctors at the clinic checked the bite and his symptoms, consulted experts, and concluded that the visitor had got bitten by a white-lipped pit viper.
The tourist’s health was stable three hours after treatment, so he was discharged from the clinic.
Doctors also provided him with the clinic’s phone number so that he could contact them when needed.
As Phu Quoc is near the end of the rainy season, local residents should wear protective clothes and wellington boots and clear bushes where venomous animals tend to hide, Dr. Doan Thanh Hien, head of S.O.S Phu Quoc Clinic, advised.
Those bitten by snakes should try to catch the animals so that doctors can prescribe the appropriate treatment regimen.
