Foreign volunteers bring early Tet cheer to orphans at Da Nang center

The gathering was jointly organized by the Da Nang Red Cross Society, the Orphans Nurturing Center, and journalists from central and local media outlets working in the city.

Alongside Vietnamese volunteers from charity clubs, youth groups, and benefactors, the event also drew nearly 20 international volunteers currently living and working in Vietnam.

The initiative sought to bring together individuals, organizations, and businesses to help ensure a meaningful Tet, which lasts about a week from February 17, for those living at the center.

It also formed part of activities under the municipal Red Cross Society’s ‘Humanitarian Tet – Spring of the Year of the Horse 2026’ campaign, which aims to promote kindness and community spirit during the holiday season.

Throughout the afternoon, volunteers decorated the center with Tet-themed ornaments, presented new clothes and lucky money, and organized interactive activities such as group games, commemorative photo sessions, and tastings of traditional holiday food.

After helping decorate the center, French volunteer Yesica Etcheto cheerfully assisted children in changing into ‘ao dai’ (Vietnam's traditional long gown) and taking Tet photos.

“This is my second time visiting the center, but this time feels especially meaningful because I was able to help prepare Tet activities,” Etcheto was quoted by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper as saying.

On the occasion, many organizations and benefactors donated Tet gifts and financial support to assist the center in its ongoing work.

The center said it has cared for nearly 550 children since its establishment in 1997, with almost 500 later placed in alternative family homes.

It is currently caring for 14 children and two people with intellectual and multiple disabilities.

In recent years, the center has regularly welcomed volunteer groups from both Vietnam and abroad, with many young volunteers supporting children’s learning and development through activities such as speech practice, spelling, coloring, and games that foster physical and emotional growth.

Nguyen Tien Lam, director of the Orphans Nurturing Center and deputy chairman of the Da Nang Red Cross Society, said the center receives volunteer support on a weekly basis.

“This is a valuable source of encouragement and shared responsibility from organizations, individuals, and benefactors, helping us provide the best possible care and upbringing,” he said.
