French villa set to become cultural, tourism landmark in Da Nang

Spring has brought renewed vitality to the century-old French-style villa at No. 1 Pasteur Street, a rare architectural relic in Da Nang City, which is poised to be transformed into a new cultural and tourism destination.

The municipal People’s Committee has recently decided to assign the property in Hai Chau Ward to the Da Nang Museum for management and use.

The decision marked a shift from an earlier plan that had proposed using the site as the headquarters of the municipal Department of Public Security.

For generations, the villa served as the headquarters of the Da Nang Women’s Union and remains one of the few surviving structures in the city that clearly bears the imprint of French architecture.

Under the new decision, the entire building and its grounds will be utilized to develop a multifunctional cultural facility.

The villa’s infrastructure, structural integrity, and landscaped surroundings are well suited to serving the community and hosting professional cultural and artistic activities.

The city’s orientation is to preserve and safeguard the villa as a distinctive architectural artwork of Da Nang, while simultaneously leveraging its value as a cultural and tourism attraction.

The site is expected to host exhibitions, educational programs, and artistic exchanges under the name ‘Da Nang Arts Space,’ with a projected total usable area of 2,065 square meters.

In addition, a two-storey building covering 215 square meters will be arranged for professional functions, including offices, artifact storage, appraisal rooms, and research spaces.

Toward the end of this year, the spirit of spring once again illuminated the more-than-100-year-old villa when the Da Nang Women’s Union organized cultural activities to celebrate the Lunar New Year, drawing considerable public interest.

Nguyen Thi Cam Binh, a resident of Da Nang, said that buildings bearing a century-old imprint are increasingly rare in the city.

She expressed hope that once the villa is officially repurposed as a cultural and tourist site, it will attract large numbers of visitors.

“Some of my friends are surprised to learn that Da Nang still has buildings with such a strong French architectural legacy, especially after so many years of war-related destruction,” Binh said.

They are very eager to learn about the history behind these structures. I believe this place can become a new destination for visitors to the city.”
