Freshwater well on Vietnam beach never runs dry

A small freshwater well located just steps from the shoreline at Bai Bang Beach in Tuy An Dong Commune, Dak Lak Province, Vietnam has become a unique attraction for both local residents and visitors thanks to its crystal-clear water that never seems to run dry.

Bai Bang Beach stretches for about 300 meters and lies roughly 100 meters from Ganh Da Dia, a national special relic site famous for its basalt rock formations.

Amid the beach’s white sand and blue waves, a tiny well near the water’s edge continues to draw curiosity from tourists.

Despite being only a few steps from the sea, the well contains fresh, cool water year-round and remains unaffected by saltwater, even as tides rise and fall.

In the early morning, when sunlight begins to illuminate the coast, local residents can often be seen carrying plastic containers and buckets to collect water from the well.

The well’s opening is quite small and is lined with dark stones placed by local people.

Visitors can easily reach the bottom with their hands.

The well lies just a few steps from the sea.

According to residents, however, the well resembles the legendary inexhaustible rice pot of Thach Sanh, a popular Vietnamese folk hero.

Although the water level remains shallow, the well never runs dry no matter how much water is drawn from it.

Residents bring containers and buckets to collect freshwater.

Mai Van Muoi, a local resident, said the well has existed since the time of his ancestors.

“The water is suitable for drinking and cooking. It is mainly used during the calm sea season from summer onward. During stormy weather and the rainy season, the well is often buried by sand," Muoi said.

“When the calm sea season returns, local people identify its location and dig away the sand to uncover the opening and use the water again.”

Although shallow, the well contains crystal-clear water and never dries up.

Local residents believe the freshwater comes from natural underground streams flowing from the mountain behind the beach.

Many first-time visitors to Bai Bang Beach are surprised to find fresh drinking water so close to the sea.

The beachside well provides local residents with a convenient source of drinking water.

“My family visited Ganh Da Dia and came here after seeing recommendations online," said Tran Minh Anh, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City.

“I expected the water to be brackish or slightly salty because the well is right next to the beach, but it was actually very sweet and cool. This is truly a rare sight.”

Beyond serving as a familiar source of freshwater for local coastal communities, the well has become one of Bai Bang Beach’s most distinctive natural features, adding to the area's appeal for visitors exploring the coastline.
