Geotechnical work begins for $2bn Ho Chi Minh City-Binh Duong metro project

On Saturday, multiple drilling sites were operating along Hung Vuong Street in Binh Duong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

Due to the urgency of the project, surveys are being conducted simultaneously at several locations, including on weekends, to ensure progress.

Workers and engineers at the sites said the drilling is being carried out intensively to meet the project’s deadlines.

Each site is marked with information boards to notify residents and commuters.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, two metro lines connecting central Ho Chi Minh City with the former Binh Duong area are listed among the city's eight priority metro projects and will be funded by public investment.

The Binh Duong New City-Suoi Tien metro line will stretch about 31.6 kilometers.

Another line, Thu Dau Mot-Ho Chi Minh City, will run approximately 35 kilometers with a projected price tag of VND113 trillion ($4.3 billion).

Authorities aim to break ground on both lines by the end of this year and finish by 2030.

The expansion of the metro network is expected to improve public transport, reduce traffic congestion, and stimulate development along the routes.

The new connections have become even more significant following the administrative merger of Ho Chi Minh City with the former provinces of Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau in July last year, as the metro system is anticipated to strengthen links between the city's major growth hubs.

Ho Chi Minh City has adjusted its plan to complete about 255 kilometers of metro lines by 2030, exceeding the central government’s target by 55 kilometers.
