The video, titled 'We Tried a Public Hospital in Vietnam (We Were Shocked!),' was posted by Gunner after accompanying his wife to Hospital 199, a public institution operated by the Ministry of Public Security in Da Nang.
Gunner, 47, previously worked as a nurse in the United States and now lives in Da Nang.
According to Gunner, the visit to Hospital 199 was initially intended to be a routine check-up after his wife was advised to undergo a chest X-ray.
Upon arrival, they were directed to the hospital’s international patient support area, where registration took about five minutes.
His wife then underwent a chest X-ray and received the results approximately 15 minutes later.
Gunner said the total cost for the consultation and X-ray was about US$4.18.

“In the United States, many medical services can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, so I was genuinely surprised by this price,” he said in the video.
After reviewing the X-ray results, doctors identified a minor issue that required further examination and recommended a chest CT scan.
Gunner said he initially expected that they would need to schedule another appointment or return on a different day, but hospital staff informed them that the scan could be performed immediately.
The CT scan cost approximately $31, according to Gunner.
While waiting for the results, he observed that most patients at the hospital were local residents, including elderly people, those accompanied by families, and individuals undergoing routine health check-ups.
According to Gunner, this gave him the impression that the facility primarily serves the daily healthcare needs of local residents rather than being designed specifically for foreign visitors.
In the video, he also pointed out a cleanliness issue in the CT scan area. However, he said hospital staff responded promptly and addressed the matter after receiving his feedback.
At the end of the visit, Gunner expressed satisfaction with the accessibility and efficiency of the hospital’s services.
“Our experience was very positive. Everything happened quickly, the staff were friendly, and the process was quite smooth,” he recounted.

Dr. Tran Nam Chung, deputy director of Hospital 199, said the costs mentioned in the video included both consultation fees and technical medical services.
According to Chung, the hospital’s high-quality clinic currently receives an average of 50-60 foreign patients per day, with the number exceeding 100 during peak periods.
“The hospital provides a wide range of services, including routine health check-ups, disease screening, internal medicine and surgical treatments, as well as other healthcare services," Chung said.
"To support international patients, we have a dedicated consultation area and staff members who can communicate in English, making the healthcare process more convenient for foreigners.”
