Rescuers in the southern province of Binh Duong have saved a 7-year-old girl who fell into a deep hole alongside the water pipe of a drilled well on Tuesday.

Local authorities said that the girl, Nguyen Tran Tu Anh, fell into the hole and became stuck at a depth of over a dozen meters at 4:30 pm yesterday, and was brought out safely at 1:37 am on Wednesday.

She was conscious when rescued and was immediately taken to the Binh Duong General Hospital in an ambulance.

The girl’s mother, a 37-year-old widow, had passed out on the scene because of extreme stress and was taken home for care, witnesses said.

The girl fell into the hole while she was playing with several other children near the drilled well in Tan Vinh Hiep Commune, Tan Uyen Town, according to witnesses.

The hole, which is around 40cm in diameter and dozens of meters in depth, was created when the well was drilled about a month ago.

Local authorities deployed over 100 people, including police officers and firefighters, to the scene to join the rescue mission.

Rescuers used hoes, shovels and three excavators to dig hundreds  of cubic meters of soil around the hole for over nine hours until they reached the girl’s location, about 13 meters from the surface, according to news website VnExpress.

During the process, drinking water, milk and oxygen were pumped through pipes down the hole to the victim.

The chairman of the Tan Uyen People’s Committee, Nguyen Thanh Phuong, also visited the scene to direct rescue efforts.

Phuong told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper correspondents on the scene that local authorities will give the best healthcare to the little girl.
