Glass bridge tourist site in northern Vietnam to suspend operations from next month

Rong May Glass Bridge tourist site in northern Vietnam’s Lai Chau Province, where foreign tourists account for around 80 percent of annual visitors, will temporarily suspend operations from October 1 due to safety concerns related to construction of an adjacent project.

The tourist site, a well-known destination in Lai Chau, is located atop O Quy Ho Pass, about 16km from Sa Pa.

Nguyen Van Huan, a representative of the Rong May Glass Bridge tourist site, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper that the tourist site is currently operating normally.

However, a project next to the site is under construction and could affect its safety.

The operator therefore plans to suspend operations from October 1 to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation.

Huan said the sudden suspension could disrupt visitors’ itineraries and affect travel agencies, employees and the company’s income.

However, ensuring the safety of visitors and employees remains the top priority, he added.

The construction site is located directly behind the Rong May Glass Bridge tourist site, on steep terrain with a high risk of landslides, raising concerns about the safety of continuing to receive visitors.

Rong May Glass Bridge began welcoming visitors in 2019 and receives around 300,000 visitors annually, about 80 percent of whom are foreign tourists.

The site generates approximately VND200 billion (US$7.6 million) in annual revenue.

“We will fully refund the money paid by agencies that have already booked our services,” Huan said.

Foreign visitors often book tours three months in advance, so while the company can compensate travel agencies financially, it cannot make up for missed tours and itineraries or the impact on their tour arrangements, he added.

“However, this is also a force majeure situation, so travel agencies understand and sympathize with the difficulties faced by the company,” Huan said.

The Rong May Glass Bridge tourist site will waive entrance fees for Lai Chau residents from now until October 1.
