Golf course dam failure leads to flooded households in northern Vietnam

This is the second time the dam at the Tam Dao golf course has failed

The dam at the Tam Dao golf course in the northern Vietnamese province of Vinh Phuc broke on Tuesday morning following heavy rains, inundating several households and causing serious damage, a local official said.

Rainwater overflowed the dam before it gave way and sent a torrent downhill, damaging several houses, Tran Van Binh, chairman of Hop Chau Town in Vinh Phuc’s Tam Dao District, where the golf course is located, said on Tuesday afternoon.

Binh attributed the broken dam to backfilling a part of the dam for the construction of the Tam Dao golf course and the dam management unit’s failure to release water in time following downpours.

This is the second time the Tam Dao golf course’s dam has broken, with the first being in 2008.

Tuesday was the second consecutive day of intense rains in different parts of Tam Dao District, leading to water levels rising in many local lakes and dams, thereby posing a high risk of dam breakages and flooding, according to the local People’s Committee.

The extreme weather conditions caused inundation at many residential areas in Minh Quang Commune and Hop Chau Town, prompting rescue and evacuation efforts.
