Australian Governor-General David Hurley and his spouse Linda Hurley are on a state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong.

The Australian Governor-General is the first foreign leader to pay a state visit to Vietnam in 2023.

Also, he is the first national guest that State President Vo Van Thuong has received since he took office in March.

This is also the first state visit between the two nations since 2018, said Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Andrew Goledzinowski.

The visit, taking place from April 3 to 6, is among a series of events in celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Australia.

Many Vietnamese officials and diplomats, including Le Khanh Hai, Chairman of the Presidential Office of Vietnam; Nguyen Minh Vu, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam; and Nguyen Tat Thanh, Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia, gathered at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on Monday afternoon to welcome the Australian top official and his entourage.

Hurley and his entourage will lay wreaths at the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs on Tuesday, and pay a floral tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum in the capital city of Hanoi.

State President Vo Van Thuong will host a reception for, and hold high-level discussions with, the Australian Governor-General at the Presidential Office.

The two leaders will also jointly visit Vietnam’s peacekeeping force, for which Canberra has provided strong support.

The Australian official will also hold talks with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

Hurley and the Australian delegation will leave Hanoi for Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday, where he and his spouse will attend a number of events in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam-Australian diplomatic relations, meet alumni of Australian universities, and visit some educational institutions in the southern metropolis.
